Cyrus Ghavam, MD

Orthopedic Spine Surgeon and USAF Flight Surgeon

Dr. Ghavam is a specialist in the care of disorders of the spine. He manages non-surgical as well as surgical conditions such as low back pain, neck pain, disc herniation, spinal stenosis, strain and whiplash, on-the-job injuries and degenerative conditions. His philosophy is to educate his patients on their conditions, provide them with options for care, and help manage them through the course of their conditions. He offers a team approach to spine care, working closely with physical therapists, physiatrists and pain specialists to optimize and individualize care, encouraging non-surgical care when appropriate. For patients who would best be served by means of surgical care, options include Salem Hospital and the Willamette Surgery Center.

Dr. Ghavam earned his BS and MS at Stanford University, and his MD, with Research Distinction, at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Alabama Birmingham, followed by a subspecialty fellowship in spine surgery at the Charlotte Spine Center. Most recently, he extended his education with an graduate degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, completed in 2017.

Dr. Ghavam is an officer in the USAF, and is privileged to serve in that capacity as an orthopaedic surgeon and flight surgeon, previously in the Alabama Air National Guard, and now in the Oregon Air National Guard. In 2014, he was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, and Small Arms Expert Marksman ribbon.

Dr. Ghavam is licensed to practice medicine in Oregon, Alabama, Colorado and Tennessee. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and is an active member of the North American Spine Society, the premier spine organization worldwide. Until 2017, he volunteered as one of two Alabama representatives for the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, a non-profit organization; now he is one of two representatives for the State of Oregon.

Dr. Ghavam holds two US patents for spinal implants, and remains active in innovative approaches to spine care. Current projects include the development of implants using nanotechnology to enhance spinal fusion (provisional patent in process), as well as an innovative laterally expanding spinal implant.
